Prescription Tab > Prescribing Authority
How Prescribing Authority is Applied to a Drug
Once the drugs have been added to an appointment, the drug status & other authorization of each should be managed first, then the prescription is generated and prescribing authority is assigned to the drug.
How it works:
- Prescribing authority is assigned to each drug at the time the prescription is generated.
- It looks to see who is generating the prescription (whoever is logged in) and what their credentials are as configured in their user profile.
- If the user has prescribing authority, their user name and license number are assigned to the drug as the prescribing authority.
- If the user does not have prescribing authority, the system will look to the drug to see if there is a medical directive, if so, and if the user is authorized to use the medical directive, their user name and the medical directive information is assigned to the drug as the prescribing authority.
- If the user does not have prescribing authority, and the drug does not have a medical directive, or the user is not authorized to use the medical directive, there will be no prescribing authority assigned to the drug.
- If the patient brings in their own prescription, the user can specify that the 'patient provided prescription' and that note will appear in place of the above.
How to manage Other Authorization:
Drugs can be setup with Medical Directives and/or sometimes a patient will bring their own prescription (Patient Provided Prescription).
Medical Directives:
- If your drugs are configured with medical directives, you will see MD ON in the Other Authorization column.
- You can turn usage OFF if you do now wish to use the medical directive (ie: the patient has a script from their family doctor) by checking on the drug(s), hitting the 'Other Authorization' button and selecting 'NONE / MD OFF'
- You can turn usage back on by checking on the drug(s), hitting the 'Other Authorization' button and selecting 'Use Medical Directive (MD ON)'
- If you have your own prescribing authority, or authorization is required to use the medical directive and you are not authorized, usage will be turned off automatically upon generating the prescription.
NEW! Patient Provided Prescription:
- If your patient brings their own prescription you can specify this by checking on the drug(s), hitting the 'Other Authorization' button and selecting 'Patient Script'
NOTE:
- If the prescription is not generated first, generating the consent form or dispensing a drug will apply the prescribing authority to the drug in the same way.
- Generating the prescription will override the prescribing authority every time. Generating the consent form only applies prescribing authority if it's not already there. If it is there it will pick up that prescribing authority and apply it to the consent form.
